Years ago we watched the Jetsons and saw the outlandish and barely imaginable phone where we could actually “see the person we were talking to”. Think about all of the things that have been developed in the last 30-40 years and ask, “How has personal performance and goal setting advanced?” Better yet…how has your “goal setting and performance advanced”?
SMART Goals and their cousins are a starting place for setting and accomplishing objectives. They may provide the novice goal setter with a reasonable and studied method for what can drive people to achieve. That is after all the reason we set goals...right? We want to think about big things and actually accomplish them. At WindRiver Strategies we postulate
that SMART Goals that are achieved outside of authentic connection to “who you are” and “what lights your fire” more often than not create a stress ridden and/or “I’m just putting in my time” workforce that probably has no particular loyalty to their company’s mission. This may not occur on day one but the “grind” tends to make itself known.
There is another way.
Imagine the characteristics of good goal setting, the natural focus of business to “compete and complete” aligned with placing willing people on teams and projects that they enjoy and have genuine interest. Imagine a workforce that sees their
efforts connected to the difference they are making in the world…in peoples’ lives. Frankly, the pace at many organizations pressed by well-intentioned accountability blurs meaningful connection between “the job”, the value it brings to the internal and external
community it serves and the people who are…well…actually doing...the “job”.
Strategic plans, SMART Goals and the like can only take us so far. Sustainable performance must be placed in the context of the unique individuals and teams that are executing tactically. This is the heart of the matter. WindRiver Strategies has developed an approach to achievement that places performance in the context of:
- The unique ways people think about goals,
- How they communicate ideas
- How they put plans into action
- The Value their efforts bring to the world and
- The Willing Choice they make to achieve.
