In this last session, as the interactive exercise began, Ralph again sat quietly but I intuitively sensed he was fully engaged in this activity. He was, also, vigorously taking notes. The exercise gave everyone in the room critical information to solving a puzzle which had a 20 minute time limit to solve it. As people tried to reach the correct answer together it got a bit chaotic and loud. Frankly, it was fun to watch. Some people were laughing. Others gave up quickly. Others still were intense trying to gather all the information and organize it. Some tried to get the group to quiet down and restore order. People said many things: "Leave me alone a minute and let me think", "Can everyone just shut up a minute so we can make sure we have all the information categorized so we can analyze it", "Is there anyone here good at this kind of stuff", "I give up", "I don't care if we get the answer or not", "We need a leader", "I bet there is not even a real answer to this problem"...
Then, 12 minutes into the exercise Ralph stood up. He didn't say anything. He just stood up. Eventually, people noticed Ralph was standing. Some even pointed at him. The mayhem slowly subsided but it almost took the entire 20 minutes. Then, one of our talkative "team members" in that session asked, "Ralph, why are you standing?" Ralph quietly responded, "I know the answer." The fact was...Ralph did know the answer.
There are many ways to be and none of them are right or wrong. You may be quiet or talkative, a peacemaker or highly assertive or you may be defined in your viewpoints or completely flexible Regardless, everything about who you are is a valuable asset and makes a valuable contribution to every family, team or group of which you are a part.
